Data centers: Built right, and right away.

The challenges you face in building and maintaining data centers are all too familiar. They’re well-known to us, too.

Most of these challenges reflect the need for speed to market: The rapid growth of broadband and the fast emergence of new technology mean you’ve always got to bring your next center online, quick.

To meet that need, we’ve come to master a few things:

  • Density. Server cooling capacity has to be robust, so your system has to put out more kW per square foot than other facilities. That means thinking through how to pack more cooling capacity into smaller areas.
  • Offsite fabrication. With a 90,000-square foot shop, BK has extraordinary capacity to build and deploy mechanical systems, modules and multi-trade racks. This fabrication shop is the foundation for our agility and cost-effectiveness.
  • Field collaboration. With so many trades working at once, you need a team who can work alongside many other people. And if something goes wrong, your mechanical sub shouldn’t point fingers or stand to the side.
  • Creating efficiency. Of course, operating a data center takes a lot of resources. So we may offer ideas on how to maximize efficiency in energy and water usage. Beyond getting you up and running, we want to save you money in the long run.

Since 2006, Batchelor & Kimball has built and installed mechanical HVAC and plumbing to support more than 1.4 gigawatts of data centers.

Most of these projects are quite large in scope. Nearly all of them brought some kind of challenge. Many retain us for ongoing operations support. More about that >

Our promise to you is to be the team best prepared for the most complex HVAC and plumbing work in data centers.

Here’s how we keep that promise:

Hire and retain talented people. Talent can’t be claimed – it has to be proven. The way we screen and hire our professionals allows us to see if they’re a good fit. If they are, they tend to stay for a long while.

Keep the team safe. With safety, we take no shortcuts and spare no expense. Every day begins with a team analysis of job hazards. And every employee is authorized to stop work if he/she observes an unsafe practice. Our mantra: Go home the way you came in.

Leverage equipment and process to ensure consistency. We fabricate systems, piping and multi-trade racks in a state-of-the-art shop (90,000 sq. ft.). Learn more about our fabrication shop

Meticulously track project steps and details. We use advanced technology to integrate information into all facets of a project, from estimating through building turnover. This helps assure pricing, protect scheduling and promote accountability. Deliverables must meet clearly defined standards.

Choose partners carefully. We work only with a select group of experienced subcontractors, whom we’ve partnered with for decades. And we bring in licensed, independent professionals – dedicated to each worksite – to inspect the work of our team before it’s delivered.

FOR Data Centers,

we construct, install and maintain:

  • Central energy plants
  • CRAC units
  • Hot aisle/cold aisle
  • Modularized data centers
  • Process chilled water
  • Air handling units
  • Chillers
  • Cooling towers
  • Variable frequency drives
  • N+1 redundancy
  • Generator and generator exhaust systems
  • Automation controls systems (installation and service)
  • Commissioning services

Finally, we keep a healthy perspective on our work:

  • We expect high performance and provide our people with unbending support. In turn, they take great pride and ownership in their work.
  • We envision what our mechanical and plumbing work will be like for those who build, use and maintain the facilities we support. The end result is foremost in mind.
  • We see ourselves as problem solvers but never believe we have all of the answers. Every project brings a lesson learned.
